Should you be worried about frost forming on your roof? The short answer is: not necessarily. Roofing systems are designed to withstand harsh weather and extreme temperatures.
Read on as we discuss when you should worry:
Take a look at the other houses on your block. Is frost forming on their roofs? If their roofs are covered in frost but yours isn’t, it’s a good idea to contact roofing contractors to inspect your roof’s insulation. In cold climates, the absence of frost is unusual. In most cases, the usual culprit is heat leaking out of your roof due to inadequate insulation.
Aside from the absence of frost on your roof, what are the other signs of inadequate insulation?
1. Patches of frost – Bald patches of roof frost are a sign there are small gaps in your roof’s insulation.
2. A higher electricity bill – Since heat is constantly escaping through your roof, your HVAC system has to work harder to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
3. Temperature differences in rooms – Some rooms might be a bit chillier because of insufficient insulation.
Of course, the only way to determine whether your roof has enough insulation is to have roofers conduct an inspection.
Don’t forget that roof insulation and ventilation go hand in hand. If warm air—which can retain more moisture—can’t exit your roof because of inadequate insulation, the trapped moisture will create a damp environment that’s the perfect breeding ground for mold.
One more thing: Make sure to vet a contractor before hiring them. Here’s a vetting tip: The number of years a company has been working in the industry can give you a good idea of their level of expertise.
