Tips on Taking Care of Your Gutters

Spring is here, which means you need to ensure your gutters are in good shape and ready to handle the onslaught of rain that this season typically brings. Today, Brewster Roofing, one of the top gutter companies in the region, shares some tips.

Clean Your Gutters

Clean gutters are far less likely to develop problems like leaks and corrosion than gutters that are left untouched for months or years on end. Whether you choose to clean the gutters yourself or have them professionally cleaned, make sure it’s part of your annual spring to-do list. Gutters should ideally be cleaned twice a year: before and after winter.

Keeping your gutters clean helps make sure your gutters have enough headroom in the event of a heavy downpour. Clogged gutters are far less efficient and have a tendency to trap moisture within the troughs, which can result in corrosion. It can also let moisture infiltrate the roofing system, which could lead to the need for unplanned roof repair. Consider investing in a gutter protection system that helps prevent leaves and debris from getting into gutter troughs.

Fix Leaks Promptly

Gutter leaks defeat the entire purpose of the gutters. This is why you should pay close attention to things that may indicate the beginnings of leaks, such as corrosion or worn-out joints and seams. Simulate rainfall by using a garden hose on the roof and look for leaks along the gutters. Repair any leaks that you find promptly to prevent more serious and costly damage.

Make Sure the Downspouts Are Clear

Downspouts are an often overlooked part of a gutter system, yet they’re every bit as essential as its other components. Part of your gutter maintenance routine should include checking the downspouts for leaks, along with signs of wear and tear. Rainwater collection systems and gutter extensions should be properly attached and sealed. When you test your gutters for leaks using the simulated rainfall method as described above, observe the runoff from the downspouts and make sure the water goes into the drains.
